There are many reasons why people want to study online, but I think it all boils down to wanting to protect your income. So, here they are in no particular order of importance are five reasons I thought of without too much trouble. I wonder if you agree with my list.
1. To Get Promoted at Work
This is probably one of the biggest reasons to study online in 2019. In fact, this is also one of the reasons that the whole industry has taken off so much. I can’t find any actual figures to back up my claim but when I was a young working lad, the only way to get more qualifications were night classes at the local adult education centre. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that studying online is vastly easier that having to go to a class in the real-world, so it’s probably true.
There are many places online where you can study for courses that will help your CV. However, one thing you might want to consider is courses that are specifically about promotion. LinkedIn Learning has a great page with 7 Online Courses That’ll Help You Get Promoted. You may want to check that out first before spending a fortune on an MBA.
If you don’t think any of those courses are useful, your next step is to head over to one of the many MOOCs available. A very good place place to start is Coursera. Every course on Coursera is taught by top instructors from the world’s best universities and educational institutions. Courses include recorded video lectures, auto-graded and peer-reviewed assignments, and community discussion forums. When you complete a course, you’ll receive a shareable electronic Course Certificate.
To be honest, if you’re looking to protect your income, you’ll probably find it in Coursera. If you can’t find it there, you almost certainly need to look for a more specialised online course provider.
2. To Change Job or Career
There will almost certainly be a time in your life when you get the call to come into your boss’ office for a ‘little chat’. When that happens, it probably means you are going to suddenly have a lot more time on your hands. The best plan when that happens is to make sure you are fully-prepared for the day that happens. And the best way to be fully-prepared to protect your income is to make sure you are qualified for your next career.
One way to make sure that you are not going to be sitting at home doing nothing for weeks, months, or even years is to keep an eye on what jobs are good for job-changers. This list will no doubt change over the years, but some are probably evergreen. A quick google found 9 Perfect Jobs for Career Changers from glassdoor.com. The post is quite long, so I’ve added the jobs, amount available, and median base salary below as well.
New Careers for Job Changers
|Job||Number of Open Jobs||Median Base Salary|
|Social Media Manager||16,818||$59,965|
Obviously, you will need to find out what sort of qualifications you need. It’s also worth working out if these need to be formal i.e. from a university, or whether you just need to show that you know what you are doing. It might also be worth considering if you can find a job like e-commerce that you can do online, which is one of the best ways to protect yourself from being sacked a second time.
3. To Keep Your Job or Career
If you are in your 40s or 50s and you are at work, look around your office and see how old your colleagues are. If they all look like they have just left university, then you may need to think about how you are going to protect your income. And it’s not like they are necessarily that up-to-date either.
The other day, I was talking to someone who was looking to improve his English language skills. I asked him what he did. He told me he was a digital marketer in India for a couple of big car companies. When I asked him if he had studied digital marketing at university, he said he had studied marketing, but not of the digital variety.
In other words, not only are you not up-to-date but, what is even worse is those younger employees, they’re not up-to-date either, which means you may be in even more trouble than you originally thought. If this is the case, start looking into online courses that will enhance the job you do.
If you aren’t sure where to start, you could just google “best online courses for working professionals” without the quotes. The first result I got was from The Muse, which was ‘43 Classes You Can Take Right Now to Advance Your Career (and They’re Free!)‘. It’s a pretty good post. In fact, I kinda wish I’d written it.
4. To Get into Further Education
Did you miss out on going to university in the normal way i.e. right after school. No worries, you are no different from millions of others who also missed out. Sadly, for most of the world, going to university is a privilege, instead of a right as it should be.
Anyway, I don’t want to get on my soapbox about paid education, so let me get to the point. You may need to show any prospective university that you have the ability to do the course you are interested in. If that is the case, you need to get online and get studying.
If you are a mature student, you may need to show that you are academically ready. This can mean many different things. So, your best bet would be to contact the university you’d like to enrol in and ask them what they need. If your first language is not English, you may also need to do an IELTS course.
Remember that not all careers require a university education. Maybe you want to get into something related to computing. In that case, you may be able to save yourself a fortune by doing online courses from other course providers. BitDegree has quite a few computer-related courses, so you could do a lot worse than start there.
5. Not All About Ways to Protect Your Income
All throughout this post, you have been reading about why it’s important to study online to protect your income. However, it’s important to remember that many people study online just for fun. This may be the best way to approach it; especially, if you don’t have an idea what you want to study.
If you want to check out some free courses offered by BitDegree, head over to this page. And if you want to check out lots of other places to do courses, this page has lots of courses on offer. Finally, good luck in whatever you decide to do. I’m sure you’ll succeed in whatever you want to do.
