Below you will find a list of all the free online courses I have been able to find. If you have found any yourself which are not on the list, feel free to add them in the comments below.

Some of these sites are really Web 1.0 but who cares, right? Free education is still free, and it’s not like the answers change. Well, not often anyway.

Please note: I have tried to make sure that these links are live and that if they are not up-to-date, they redirect to something that is.

W3Schools is a web developers site, with tutorials and references on web development languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, Python, jQuery, Java, W3.CSS, and Bootstrap, covering most aspects of web programming. The site derives its name from the World Wide Web (W3), but is not affiliated with the W3C.

Thousands of sites are now linked to Purplemath, and hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the site each day. Purplemath has been listed as an online resource in such books as Cliffs Quick Review: Algebra II, has been used to supplement much online instruction, and has been used as a reference by such luminaries as Cosmos magazine.

BBC Learning

The BBC has archived its learning portal, which means it is no longer updated. Still, there is some good stuff to read and may give you an idea of what you want to study somewhere else.

The Internet Archive offers over 15,000,000 freely downloadable books and texts. There is also a collection of 550,000 modern eBooks that may be borrowed by anyone with a free archive.org account.

Wikibooks – Open books for an open world

Wikibooks is a Wikimedia project for collaboratively writing open-content textbooks that anyone, including you, can edit right now by clicking on the edit link that appears near the top of each Wikibooks page. Wikibooks has two sub-projects; Wikijunior which is aimed at children and the Cookbook which is our collection of recipes and culinary topics.

The SBA offers a variety of online courses to help you start and run your business. As far as I can tell, all the courses are free and come with a PDF version so you can download them and read at your own leisure.

Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg offers over 58,000 free eBooks. Choose among free ePub and Kindle eBooks, download them or read them online. You will find the world’s great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired. Thousands of volunteers digitised and diligently proofread the eBooks, for enjoyment and education.

Not really a MOOC but I thought it went best in this category. The GCFLearnFree.org program has helped millions around the world learn the essential skills they need to live and work in the 21st century. From Microsoft Office and email to reading, math, and more, GCFLearnFree.org offers more than 180 topics, including more than 2,000 lessons, 800+ videos, and 55+ interactives and games, completely free.

iTunes U

iTunes U provides everything an instructor needs to bring the classroom together on iPad—build lessons with apps and your own materials, collect and grade assignments, start class discussions or talk with students to answer questions and provide feedback. iTunes U also allows anyone with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to learn from a large collection of free education content in public courses from leading schools, universities, museums, and cultural institutions.

Librarian Chick

Librarian Chick does pretty much what it says on the tin. A huge amount of categories with everything free or free with a sign-up. It’s a bit old and I’m not sure how many links are no longer working, but the few I clicked worked so well worth checking out.

Open Education Database

Anyone can access OpenCourseWare online, whether they are a registered student or not. While participants do not receive certification or credit for the work, it provides the opportunity to take free college courses online on any topic desired, better preparing them for an eventual degree, or offering the chance for continued learning and professional development.

This site gives you all the information you need to get you started with welding. Obviously, it doesn’t have a practical aspect to it, but applying for a welding apprenticeship showing that you have done your research is never going to be a drawback.

Automotive Systems

This course is written with the intention of starting you on the correct road to becoming a good auto mechanic. In it we describe the different parts of the automotive system and how they operate together to make the system run the way it should.

Universities

Carnegie Mellon University

The Open Learning Initiative. These courses are meant for Independent Learners i.e. students who don’t have a teacher and a Course Key. Courses are self-paced and self-guided. No instructors will monitor your progress. OLI doesn’t grant scores or credit for completion.

Harvard University

Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Harvard has the largest financial endowment of any academic institution in the world, standing at $30 billion as of September 2012. Its history, influence and wealth have made it one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Class Central is offering over 150 Harvard courses here. Harvard also has a portal on edx.org. Kyoto Open Courseware

This site is involved in making course materials available through an open content license. EduCommons’ goals are to provide free, searchable, access to course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world, to catalyse the growth of communities of learners, and to extend the reach and impact of the OpenCourseWare concept.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts known traditionally for research and education in the physical sciences and engineering, and more. These courses are on the Class Central platform. OCW makes the materials used in the teaching of MIT’s subjects available on the Web. Free lecture notes, exams, and videos from MIT. No registration required.

Archived Courses

These courses have been archived in OCW’s [email protected] repository for long-term access and preservation. In most cases, an archived course is an older version which has been replaced on the OCW site by a more recent version with the same (or similar) course number and title.

Open Universities Australia

At Open Universities Australia, they believe quality education should be available to everyone, from anywhere, regardless of previous study experience. Originally founded in 1993 as Open Learning Australia, they have apparently stayed true to their core belief that education has the power to transform lives and should be accessible to all. They want to empower students with more choice and the guidance to find the best fit.

University of Pennsylvania

The Online Books Page was founded, and is edited, by John Mark Ockerbloom, He is a digital library planner and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. He is responsible for the content of the site. Alison Miner is Associate Editor. The site is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, who provide the server, disk space, and network bandwidth for the site. They also employ the editor, and support him in his various digital library activities (of which this is but one).

University of the People

University of the People is tuition-free, which means there is no charge for teaching or instruction.UoPeople charges only an application fee and an Assessment Fee per course completed. For those who cannot afford these fees, scholarships are available to help support their studies.

Stanford University

Leland Stanford Junior University, commonly referred to as Stanford University or simply Stanford, is a private research university in Stanford, California in the northwestern Silicon Valley near Palo Alto. It is one of the most prestigious universities in the world. There are over 170 Stanford University courses on offer here.

University of Washington

Some of these courses are free and some charge a fee, which typically allows you to access additional features and/or earn a certification that you can use to demonstrate your accomplishment.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Yale University

Each course includes a full set of class lectures produced in high-quality video accompanied by such other course materials as syllabi, suggested readings, exams, and problem sets. The lectures are available as downloadable videos, and an audio-only version is also offered. In addition, searchable transcripts of each lecture are provided.
