There have probably been millions of articles on how to rank on Google, so I naturally thought that there is room for one more. However, unlike most of the other articles, I’m going to make this so simple even my mother could understand it.
How to Rank on Google
Right, you have probably read that you need to do lots of different SEO tricks so you can rank on Google in a matter of days. Now, don’t get me wrong. There are thousands of things, well a lot anyway that you need to do to rank on Google, but if you try and learn them all, you’re going to end up doing none of them.
Obliterating the Blogging Competition
Before we go on, I should mention that when I said obliterate the competition, I may have been practising a bit of hyperbole. Having said that, if you can follow some simple instructions, there is no reason why you can’t obliterate the competition if you put your back into it.
What Plugins You Need
If you’re using a WordPress website, one of the great benefits is the number of plugins that you can install in your back office. However, for now, I just want you to install the one plugin called Yoast.
Yoast is a plugin that helps you write articles so that you are creating them in the best possible way from a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) point of view. It will tell you about the length of your title, the keyword you have chosen if you’ve forgotten to add internal links, external links, and alt text for images.
What’s excellent about Yoast is that you don’t have to really understand why you need to do the things it’s telling you to do. All you need to do is follow the instructions that it gives you, and you’ll know that your article is optimised for SEO.
Make sure you install Yoast before you do anything else. That way, when you have finished writing your article, and you paste it in as a new post, you won’t forget to do the SEO that’s needed.
How to Start Ranking Your Website
The first thing you need to do is start writing. I know that sounds obvious, but that’s how you begin to rank your site. I’m assuming that you have sorted out your website and the niche you’re promoting.
I’m also going to assume that you have at least 10 ideas or so that you want to write about. If you haven’t got at least a few ideas, you may well not have chosen the best niche for you. But let’s assume that everything is okay niche-wise.
Write Enough to Get Noticed
There is little point writing a couple of hundred words and pressing publish. Google will never even notice it let alone rank it. You have got to write enough to get seen. So, what are you going to do if you’re crap at writing?
Start with lists. You know what I mean:
– 10 Reasons Why You Should Start Drinking Olive Oil
– 5 Steps to Successfully Lose Weight in Less Than a Month
– 7 Benefits of Eating a Burger King Diet
Okay, the last one is not serious, but if you use numbers, you can divide the article into easily manageable sections. Let’s look at how you can plan your articles. Your post should be made up of:
– Main Body
Now, if your introductions and conclusions are 75 words each, then that’s 150 words. Now you only have 850 words to write in the main body. So let’s divide the main body into sections as well.
If you are going to do 10 reasons why…, each idea will be about 85 words each. I think you’ll agree that writing 85 words should be pretty straightforward to accomplish.
Let’s look at the other examples. 5 steps would be about 160 words, which is still very doable, and 7 benefits is about 120 words each. None of those word targets are particularly difficult to achieve.
If you are reading this thinking, “Yeah, that’s easy for you to say, but you know how to write”, this article so far adds up to 718 words, and I can promise you I have not been taxing my brain to write this.
Start Writing Regularly
Okay, so you have started writing, and you are posting regularly. By the way, you should be aiming for a minimum of three posts a week. However, if you want to destroy the opposition, you need to publish a post every day.
If you’re struggling to think of topics to write about, start being creative. Every time you write a post, you will almost certainly write about something that you want to add more details about. Put those ideas in a list to write about later.
Or you could do what I do and promote half-a-dozen things and write about each one on a particular day. If you look at the posts on the homepage of this site, you’ll notice that each post is on a specific topic.
Monday, I write about one topic. Tuesday, I write about another, and Wednesday, I write about yet one more. If you’re writing about different topics, which are still related to your niche, you will be able to think of hundreds of various topics.
Keep Writing Regularly
Finally, you have to keep writing. I bullshit you not. The day I am writing this post, my site increased its average ranking by six places. At the moment of writing this article, I have been writing posts daily, and every single day, this site has improved its average position on Google.
Some days your site’s rank may go down. But if you post regularly, it is more likely that your website will go up steadily. Make sure that your site is linked to Google’s search console so that you can check what your site is doing each day.
