Unless you have been living in a cave somewhere in Afghanistan, you have probably heard of Social Media but you may not know what a Social Media Marketer is. And even if you do, you may not be aware of what being one means. Well, read on for a very quick overview of what Social Media Marketing is and whether it’s worth training to become a Social Media Marketer.
What Is Social Media Marketing?
Social media marketing is a form of digital marketing. One way it is used is as a way to promote products or services but that is not the only reason it’s important. Companies also use social media marketing to publish content to help promote a brand’s image, interact with people who follow a certain brand or lifestyle, and use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn to drive traffic to a website or specific article.
How Are Social Media and Content Marketing Linked?
Unless you have also been living in another cave, you’ll know that Google is the world’s most used search engine. Google does deliver social media platform results, which is important if you’re running social media campaigns, the primary goal of Google is to show results for websites.
Of course, Google also delivers video results, primarily because it owns YouTube but also because video content is becoming much more important as a way to reach out to potential visitors to websites. Using social media marketing to drive people to websites will show Google that the website is popular, thus raising the page rank of the website in question.
How Are Websites and Social Media Linked?
So social media drives traffic to websites or specific pages within a website, which makes Google believe that the website in question is popular. As the post goes up the page rank, more people discover and read it. If the website owner has their head screwed on right, the content will have buttons that will allow visitors to share on social media what they have written.
If the website is a business site, it may want to be shared on more serious social media than Facebook or Twitter. One particularly good site for sharing articles that answer more important questions than what Kanye bought Kim for their wedding anniversary is LinkedIn. By putting a call to action in the article, a social media marketer can ask readers to share the article onto the social media sites they want.

Good God, yes! In fact, trying to describe everything in a post that I’m trying to keep relatively short is impossible. Social media marketing encompasses so much of the much broader work of Digital Marketing that whatever sort of digital marketing you’re interested in, social media marketing is something you absolutely need to learn.
Is It Worth Training to Become a Social Media Marketer?
There are always only to real questions you need to ask when you are considering doing any job. What’s it pay and will you like it? If you like a job but the money is crap, then you may not be able to do it even if you wanted to. If the money’s great but the job is crap, then it really doesn’t matter how much you can earn. You probably won’t stick at it and even if you did, do you really want to do a job you hate for the rest of your life just because the money is good.
There are quite a lot of different salaries related to social media marketing on the internet so it’s not really possible to say how much you might get paid. However, according to Glassdoor, a social media manager, which you’ll probably want to aim for, is around £33,000. It’s not great money but then again, it’s not terrible either. And if you can get a job working for something like the BBC, you could earn up to £50,000, which is pretty good.
What Are Your Next Steps If You Want to Proceed?
Obviously, if you want to get into social media marketing, you need to do a course. There are thousands out there and many of them are seriously expensive. That may be a good way to go if you want to take it seriously. And if you do, I would suggest you invest in a Digital Marketing course which has a social media marketing component.
