Hello and welcome to another article in my series on Kindle eBook Publishing. In this article, we’re going to look at how to find profitable Kindle eBook niches. Before you continue reading, you should know that this post is for people who are looking to start a successful business writing non-fiction Kindle eBooks. If you are doing well on Kindle or enjoy fiction writing, then move on please – nothing to see here.
Profitable Kindle eBook Niches
First of all, many bloggers post about making sure you that you choose a niche you’re interested in. To be honest, there is no reason for this. If you’re a blogger or affiliate marketer, then you definitely need to choose a niche you’re interested in. Since the most critical part of the success of a Kindle eBook is marketing, it doesn’t really matter if you like the topic or not.
Having said that, it’s probably best to find profitable Kindle eBook niches you like because well, it’s just more exciting and fun to promote something you’re actually into, rather than just promoting eBooks for money. Let me tell you why…
Creating Mini-Businesses for eBooks
You really want to each eBook to be its own little business. For example, your ‘business’ should include at least some of the following:
– a website
– a landing/email capture page
– a free bribe to get the email
– an autoresponder series
To be honest, the first four are pretty much obligatory, with the last three being optional extras that some people do, but I don’t.
The other reason why it’s good to start with profitable Kindle eBook niches is that your one eBook will hopefully turn into a series of eBooks, which is where the really good money is. If you are having to write your sixth eBook on keeping fit, when you’re a fat, balding 55-year-old who lists his two favourite hobbies as smoking and drinking, I just don’t think you’re going to be that into it.
What you’re really looking to do is find a way to release eBooks time and time again, building one mini business after another. By the way, if you’re in a rush and want to skip ahead, check this out. List as Many Niches as Possible
So, remember what you read about and list down anything at all that you would like to write an eBook on. Any interest, no matter how small that interest is, will do. Remember, you don’t need to passionate about it. Hell, you don’t even need to know anything about it because you can always just get someone else to write it for you.
Now, don’t sit in front of your computer when you’re doing this. Go buy a little notepad, one that comes with its own pen, and spend some time listing. Now, go for a walk, buy a coffee, go to your local newsagents and look at the magazine section. Try watching a movie or sitting in your garden, having a cigarette or three.
The point is to take your time and come up with a big list. Don’t worry about whether you have come up with profitable Kindle eBook niches not. You don’t have to worry about whether it’s a million dollar idea or not. Don’t think like that at all. We’ll look at how you’re going to decide if it’s a good idea, money-wise, in the next section.
Find Out if Your Niches Have Value
Okay, so you should have your list of interests, niches, etc. If you haven’t done that yet, do at least two or three before reading on. Having a few niches listed will allow you to compare and contrast your ideas in this next step.
So, the rule of thumb here is that you should sell something that’s already selling. This makes sense, right? If one of your niches is the sex life of ping pong balls and other people who have written on the same subject have sold all of half-a-dozen eBooks, then I think we can all agree that not many people are interested in how ping pong balls get it on.
Please don’t make the mistake of thinking eBooks on ping pong balls screwing are unpopular because no one has written a good one. The reason those eBooks aren’t selling is that, as the Americans put it, nobody period is period interested period.
Leave Your Finest Work for Later
Of course, if your entire raison d’etre is to write about ping pong balls, then, by all means, go for it. However, don’t expect to make a lot of money. Personally, I would go down the ‘make lots of money’ route first. You can always do ping pong ball porn later.
So, let me reiterate for those of you that still have quite got that. You’re interested in people who have got their credit card out and bought at least one of the 1.2 million Kindle eBooks that are sold on Amazon each DAY. They’re the people you’re interested in because these are the profitable Kindle eBook niches.
If you’re wondering how you’re going to sell eBooks on topics that other people have already written on, don’t worry about that at the moment. However, the trick you need is to stand out and be unique. A great example of this is Google. If Google had worried about the competition (there were 27 search engines at the time), then I doubt any of us would have heard of it.
The Amazon Bestsellers’ Rank
The best place to find what’s selling on Amazon is on Amazon itself. Amazon ranks its eBooks in a list called the Best Sell Rank. It ranks eBooks based on sales by number which it updates every hour. The lower the number, the better its sales are.
All you have to do is find the best niches in the bestseller rank. Part of the problem is that this can take quite a long time. I read somewhere that in the US, there are 38,000 categories alone. There are plenty of tools you can buy to help you, but if you want a free one, try a Chrome extension called DS Amazon Quick View.
The two main things you’re looking for in a niche are sales and reviews. If you install DS Amazon Quick View, you can see how well a book is ranking. And, of course, you can see how many reviews the book has got just looking at the book’s thumbnail or page.
A Cool Tool for Sales Figures
You can use this rather handy tool to find out how many eBooks are being sold daily or monthly. Even though an eBook might be ranked seemingly quite low, it doesn’t mean that it’s not making sales. The rank of the eBook in the example below is 3056, and it still gets nearly 80 sales a day. Pretty sweet, I reckon. Plus, the eBook I picked also had 214 reviews, so that would be a pretty good niche.
One thing I haven’t mentioned yet is drilling down to a more specific niche. A book entitled, “How to Lose Weight” would almost certainly not do well as it’s way too broad a topic. “How to Lose Belly Fat in 21 Days” would be much more successful because people look to lose belly fat, not weight in general.
Okay, and that’s that. You have now got a list of different niches, and you have researched which ones are worth doing and which ones aren’t. Well done. You have already got further than most people who do no more than have a vague idea and then stop. So, as I said, well done.
What Are Categories and Sub-Categories
In this section, we’re going to do more concerning what I mentioned above. We need to find a specific niche, or sub-niche, which will make it easier for our eBook to be discovered. Just in case you’re a little confused about niches and sub-niches, let me give you some examples.
In the image below, you can see all the categories in Kindle eBooks. Let’s choose Business and Finance.
Below you can see the sub-categories in Business and Finance. As you can see now, there are many sub-categories.
If we click on yet one more sub-category, Industries and Professions, we can see even more sub-categories. It’s in one of these sub-categories below that you want to dominate. Think of it as being a big fish in a small pond.
And that’s categories and sub-categories for you. Now that you have got that, let’s continue.
Drilling Down to find Profitable Kindle eBook Niches
So, we want to drill down to find a niche that works well for us. Remember we’re looking for a good rank and a reasonable number of reviews (50+). Since I am in the making money online niche in a big way anyway, I thought we could take a look at marketing. Let’s head over to the Kindle Store and see what we can find.
Obviously, marketing is a part of business, so I’ve clicked on Business and Finance and lo and behold, there is the category Marketing and Sales. Clicking on that, we discover there are no more sub-categories, so we now need to think about what sort of marketing I’m looking for.
Some Good Examples of Profitable Kindle eBook Niches
Third on the bestsellers’ list is an eBook entitled Influence – The Psychology of Persuasion. It’s ranked at 11,674 in Kindle score and using the calculator above, I can see it has 22 sales a day or 336 transactions per month. Not too shabby at all.
SELL LIKE CRAZY: How to Get As Many Clients, Customers and Sales As You Can Possibly Handle, which is one below Influence – The Psychology of Persuasion, is doing even better at 48 a day or 716 a month. Very nice indeed.
Last one and one that’s close to my heart as an online seller. One Million Followers: How I Built a Massive Social Following in 30 Days. This eBook is selling 8 a day or 123 a month. I don’t want to harp on about money, but even if Brendan Kane (the author) is only earning $5 a book, that’s $40 a day or $615 a month.
Okay, you’re not going to retire on that sort of money, but part of your entire philosophy is to build a mini-business around each eBook you create. So, perhaps with other monetisation, you can add another $5 per book, which now means you’re earning about $1,200 a month.
Additionally, we’re not talking about just one eBook. The idea is that you produce eBook after eBook. Thus, you can multiply that $1,200 by how many eBooks you have in the Kindle Store. If you can create 10, 20, or 30 eBooks, all selling an average of 5 eBooks a day, you can see how the money can add up.
You Still Need to Remember Keywords
Finally, let’s spend a moment talking about keywords. I am sure that you’ve heard of keywords before, but just in case, keywords are the words that people use to search for the information they’re looking for. If you’re googling something about Granada (where I live), you might search “places to visit in Granada”.
However, when I searched the above, I got 26 million results, so I might want to drill down a bit, so I try “cheap places to visit in Granada”, and I get nearly 12 million results. I think a little bit more, and I go for “cheap places to visit in Albaicin”, and I get a more manageable 266,000 results.
Amazon works in the same way as Google. I just searched ‘online marketing’ and got about 10,000 results, which is way too much. Drilling down a bit, I got 2,000 results for ‘online affiliate marketing’, which is much better. Finally, I tried “online ClickBank affiliate marketing” (ClickBank is an affiliate marketing network selling digital products), and I got 388 results.
So, what I have tried to show you is that you need to look at everything holistically. You can’t just concentrate on Keywords. If you do, you might end up writing books that no one wants. If you look at what’s selling and you haven’t thought about keywords, then your eBook may never get discovered.
Wrapping Finding Profitable Kindle eBook Niches Up.
I started out writing this as a quick article that you could read in a spare couple of minutes. Obviously, it turned into something slightly more substantial, which should give you fair warning on how tricky finding profitable Kindle eBook niches really is. One thing I have taken away from re-reading it is that selling eBooks can be a very profitable business, but getting it right so that your eBooks sell is another thing entirely.
Keeping that in mind, I would like to recommend that you check out Stefan Pylarinos’ K Money Mastery. I believe that it is by far and away the best Kindle eBook Publishing course, especially considering the price.
